来月から新たにネイティブの先生がクレインファミリーに加わります。とても興味深いバックグラウンドを持つMiki Yamada先生にインタビューをしました。
Q1：自己紹介をお願いします。
はじめまして、ミキです。父は日本出身、母は香港出身です。生まれは日本ですが、3歳のときに父の転職で日本を離れました。それから、北京と上海にあるアメリカのインターナショナルスクールに通い、その後、社会学と文化的人類学の学位を取得するために香港に移りました。また、オークランドとウィーンにそれぞれ半年間暮らし、大学卒業後、去年日本に戻るまでの８か月間はスペインに住んでいました。
英語の他に日本語、北京漢語、広東語、それにスペイン語も話せます。
Q2：クレイン英学校で教えたいと思ったきっかけは何ですか？
原田先生とそのご家族です！私はクレインの家族が大好きで、彼らはとても理解があって、親しみやすい方です。また、私自身、女性の平和参画に興味を持つたひとりの人類学者として、原田先生とそのご家族が「世界平和への貢献」をモットーに掲げている価値観に共感ししたのです。実は、私の父方の祖父母が長崎出身で、戦争の歴史は私が平和を理解する上では重要な要素でもあります。また、クレインには、いろんな生き方を模索したい人のためのユニークなリソースを提供してくれます。もしあなたが、いまクレイン英学校に来るかどうかって迷っているなら、私の答えは、「まずは来るべき」です:)
Q3。Miki先生にとっての英語を教える上での信念は何ですか？
英語の習得はテストのためだけではありません。自分とは異なる文化を持つ人々とコミュニケーションをとれるように英語を学んでほしいと思っています！私は英語のネイティブとして、英語を通して幸運にも、シリア、ニューカレドニア、アルゼンチン、オランダ、メキシコなどの人々と親友になることができました。
Q4。英語を教える上で一番のやり甲斐は何ですか？
英語を教えていて最も楽しいことは、生徒たちの前向きな学習意欲を目の当たりにすることです。生徒が別の言語を学び、さまざまな人々の生活に触れることで、それまでの世界観から成長するのを見るのが大好きです。また、多くの生徒がとてもクリエイティブなので、生徒から新しいアイデアをもらえることもやり甲斐の一つです。
Q5：休みの日はどう過ごしていますか？
休みの日には、友達に会ったり（新しい人も昔からの友達も！）、本を読んだり、瞑想をしたり、日記や詩を書いたり、漫画を描いたり、ポッドキャストを聴いたり、サイドビジネスをしたり、ストレッチしたり…それから（運が良ければ）誰かが用意してくれた食事を食べることです ;）
Q6。ミキ先生のこれからの展望は？
私は、社会から取り残された活動家の声を世界的に広めながら、移民と女性のエンパワーメント（地位向上）に努めています。これからの目標は、私の活動を通して、本当の意味での多様性があらゆる場所で生産性と幸福の向上に貢献することです。
Q7。これから英語を学ぶ人たちへのメッセージをお願いします。
新しい言語を学ぶことを恐れないでください！間違えても大丈夫です。できれば多くの間違いをしてください:) 私自身、昨年スペイン語を学ぶ中で、最初は先生の言っていることが少しもわかりませんでしたが、数か月でその言語を習得し、それまでは話せなかった人とも会話することができました。上達したいという思いがあれば英語はできるようになります。私のこれからの目標は、「英語が上達して、世界に影響を与えられるような日本人を育成すること」です。皆さんにお会いできるのを楽しみにしています。どうぞよろしくお願いします！:)

Q1. Could you tell me a bit about yourself?
My name is Miki! My dad is from Japan and my mom is from Hong Kong:) I was born in Japan but when I was three, I left Japan due to the relocation of my father’s job. I went to American international schools in Beijing and Shanghai, and then moved to Hong Kong for my university degree in social and cultural anthropology. I lived in Auckland and Vienna for half a year each in between my years in Hong Kong, and when I graduated from my university, I flew to Spain for eight months before coming back to Japan last year.:) Besides English, I speak Japanese, Mandarin, Cantonese, and Spanish!
Q2. What inspired you to work for Crane?
Taka, Satoko and Kyoko! I love the family at Crane. They are very understanding and friendly. In addition, as an anthropologist intrigued by women’s participation in peace, I resonated with the values that Taka and his family uphold in Crane’s motto ‘For the contribution to world peace.’ My grandparents from my father’s side are from Nagasaki, and the history of war has left an impact on how I understand peace. Crane also provides unique resources for those who would like to explore alternative ways of life. If you are debating whether or not to come to Crane, it’s a BIG yes from me:)
Q3. What belief do you have in teaching English?
The acquisition of the English language should not just be for an exam:) I would love for you to learn English so you can communicate with people whose cultures are different than yours! As a native speaker in English, I have been fortunate to utilize the language to become dear friends with people from Syria, New Caledonia, Argentina, Netherlands, Mexico and many more.
Q4. What is the best part of teaching?
The best part of teaching is the students’ willingness to learn! I love watching students grow out of their previous conception of the world as they are exposed to different people’s lives through the learning of another language. I also love receiving new ideas from my students because my students are often also very creative.
Q5. How do you like to spend your free time?
During my free time I work on my side hustles, meet friends (old and new!), read books, meditate, write journal entries/poetry, draw cartoons, listen to podcasts, stretch, and (if I’m lucky) eat food that someone else prepared. ;)
Q6. What is your future perspective?
I strive towards empowering migrants and women while amplifying the voices of marginalized activists globally. My goal is for true diversity to be recognized as a factor in contributing to greater productivity and happiness everywhere!
Q7. Any message to English learners?
Do not be afraid to learn a new language! It’s okay to make mistakes. Make many mistakes if you can:) I learned Spanish last year and I did not understand a single bit of what the teacher was saying at first, but I picked up the language in a few months and could converse with people whom I could not talk to in the past. Learn English because you want to. There are people I met overseas who would ask me repetitively 'why is your English so good' as though English is not meant to be my native language. It used to be very frustrating explaining to them my education background, so these days I just smile and express my gratitude. My goal is to nurture Japanese people to attain a fluent level of English and rock the world.:)
